🏷️ Own Brand, No GPU

Profitable pivots, legacy code, no model to train.

29 avril 2026

Freepik rebranded yesterday as Magnific 🇪🇸. Behind the new name: €196m of ARR, a million paying subscribers, and on the cap table, not a single American fund. Not a single fund at all.

For anyone following the European AI debate, that sits uncomfortably. The argument from London, Berlin and Brussels has run for two years on a simple equation: to hold the line against the United States, Europe must raise fast and raise big, or fall behind. Magnific quietly says otherwise, with €196m of ARR to back it up.

The company is profitable. It pays its 400 staff out of margin. Its enterprise book includes the BBC 🇬🇧, Damm 🇪🇸, DeliveryHero 🇩🇪 and Puma 🇩🇪, all running full production pipelines on the platform. One technical detail matters: Magnific got here without building its own video model. The platform sits on top of Veo 3.1 (Google) and Seedance 2.0 (ByteDance), with users free to pick the rest. No GPU farm to rent, no foundation model to train. Runway 🇺🇸 plays in the same lane: roughly €900m raised since 2018, a Series E in February at a €4.6bn valuation, targeting €240m of ARR by year end. Magnific posts comparable revenue without outside capital and on positive margin. Funding isn’t the variable that decides this race.

The trajectory still doesn’t replicate. Joaquín Cuenca sold Panoramio to Google in 2007. Three years later he co-founded Freepik in Málaga. By the time DALL-E 2 shipped in 2022, he had twelve years of recurring revenue behind him, a brand creatives already knew, and subscribers paying every month. You bootstrap a €196m AI product from that position, not from a student bedroom. Bootstrapping starts on the balance sheet.

From 550 to 400 employees in two years: the pivot cut a chunk of the legacy Freepik teams and brought in different profiles. The « profitable, bootstrapped, happy » version of the story tends to gloss over that bit.

For two years Europe has argued about funding a foundation model in the name of industrial patriotism, as though the only answer to OpenAI ran through ten billion in public money. Magnific points elsewhere. The serious policy question is how to protect and pivot the profitable companies the continent already has. Adyen 🇳🇱 in payments, Spotify 🇸🇪 in audio, ARM 🇬🇧 in silicon, Magnific 🇪🇸 in creative tools. Those assets are worth rather more than a sovereign cloud whose APIs nobody actually queries.

No American funding, no problem. Provided you’ve already built something worth pivoting.
