🇪🇺 Why Italy?
The funding pipeline isn’t what you’ve been told
Bending Spoons closed its acquisition of AOL in March for €1.4bn, backed by €2.6bn in debt arranged by Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan. A 755-person Milanese outfit swallowing a founding relic of the American internet, firing the teams, centralising engineering, pushing margins towards 50%. Valuation: €10bn. You can find that cold. It works.
Except Bending Spoons bears no resemblance to the Italian tech ecosystem it nominally represents. Its capital is American, its targets are American, 55% of revenue comes from the States. Think of it as a Milanese private equity operation dressed as a startup. The Italian Tech Landscape published in early April counts nine unicorns worth a combined €28.8bn, and the ecosystem that produced them runs on entirely different fuel: 71% domestic capital, barely 4% North American. That gap matters, because it shapes what gets built and for whom.
Satispay tells you more about how that ecosystem actually works than any landscape report. Its payment network does not ride Visa or Mastercard rails, it routes around them entirely. Bank account to bank account, a flat 20-cent commission above €10, nothing below. Italian cooperative banks had a clear strategic interest in backing an alternative to card networks, and Banca Sella, Banca Etica and Iccrea Banca did exactly that in Series A and B. Tencent and Block only arrived in Series C, once the product had already captured 75% of Italian mobile payments and passed four million users. A company born in a country where cash still dominated and card fees were strangling small merchants, now expanding into France from a base in Nice.
Exein, in Rome, raised €170m in 2025 to embed cybersecurity directly into connected-device firmware. The EU Cyber Resilience Act enters into force, manufacturers must secure their appliances at the factory gate, and a 62-person Roman company already protects two billion devices globally. Balderton led the round, HV Capital joined. A regulatory constraint converted into a market. Jet HR does the same with Italian payroll, a legal thicket that American HR platforms never wanted to touch: €42m raised, more than a thousand client companies in less than two years. Generative Bionics, founded in Liguria in 2025, is pulling robotics research out of IIT and into product with €7m in seed funding and a team of 80 engineers.
Local frictions, regulatory, banking, structural, converted into defensible companies. Funded by public money, cooperative banks and corporate balance sheets, not by the pipeline running from Slush to Y Combinator. Whether these companies can scale beyond their domestic moats remains an open question, and not all of them will. But the conventional map of European tech stops at Berlin, Paris, Stockholm. The territory is considerably larger than that.
