On the Ukrainian front, the targeting software on a Helsing 🇩🇪 drone is rewritten and put back under fire every fortnight. No conventional weapons programme runs at that tempo. Helsing now builds at software speed. Whether the buyer can order at software speed is the question its valuation quietly rests on.

€16.2bn. That is what five years of existence are worth, after a €1.6bn Series E closed in mid-July. Helsing is now valued above Hensoldt 🇩🇪 and Renk 🇩🇪, two long-established defence electronics houses, on the €26.9m its German subsidiary booked in 2024. A €16bn tag on €26.9m of revenue is a bet, and the bet has a name: that Europe means what it says.

What Lightspeed, JPMorgan, Goldman and Canada’s CPP pension fund are pricing is a political timetable. Europe has committed to €800bn of rearmament, aiming for 55% of procurement from European factories by 2030. Germany’s 2026 acquisition plan lists 154 major programmes; only 8% go to American suppliers, against an overwhelming majority five years ago. The demand is real; committing €800bn is the easy part, and spending it fast is the part no European ministry has rehearsed. Helsing’s valuation is a derivative of that shift.

The mechanism that turns €26.9m into €16.2bn is borrowed wholesale from Anduril 🇺🇸, the American firm valued at €55bn: raise on the vision, build with the customer, let revenue catch up later. It is an awkward thing to copy Silicon Valley in order to prove Europe can stand alone. The decisive input, though, cannot be imported. No American firm has a war two hours from its workshops, or a procurement system being rewritten in real time. That same month, Quantum Systems 🇩🇪 closed €1.1bn at €7.2bn. An asset class is forming, and its proving ground is European.

The model sells a maturity Helsing does not yet have. Its much-trumpeted tie-up with Rheinmetall 🇩🇪 lapsed last summer, and the first drones sent to Ukraine convinced soldiers only after leaving them sceptical. That may be exactly what the continent wanted after forty years of programmes immaculate on paper and delivered late.

A firm that rewrites weapons software every fortnight is worth €16bn only if European states can order at that speed. Nothing in the recent record of public defence procurement suggests they can. A tank programme is counted in years, a Helsing build cycle in weeks, and the valuation assumes Berlin, London and The Hague can close that distance. The funds are betting that this time Europe holds the pace it has set itself. They are wagering on the bureaucracy as much as on the engineering.
